Two fleets hit the water for three races in Muri lagoon on Saturday and three races on Monday.
Six Optimists and three Bics took part in the races. Some close starts and good racing saw a great battle between Optimist sailors Max and Koru McDonald and Griffin Wittwer, with Max McDonald winning, Wittwer in second place and Koru McDonald in third in the first three races.
In the Bic class, the three sailors George Newman-Holt, Jesse Easterbrook and Seychelle Carter battled with one another in the testing conditions to share a win each.
This set the stage for an interesting day two of the six race Regatta.
In the Optimist fleet, Wittwer took charge during races four and five, winning both, with Sheldon Milner taking second place, and Max McDonald third in the fourth race, while Koru McDonald came in second and Milner in third during the fifth race.
This set up an interesting final race for the Optimists. Either Max McDonald or Wittwer could win the Regatta, the first one through the finish line would take it.
Max McDonald got an excellent start and held a comfortable lead to the end, while Wittwer fought hard to catch up, crossing the line in second place. Grace Newman-Holt came across the line in third for the final race.
In the Bic class Easterbrook won the fourth race, while George Newman-Holt won the fifth race. Like the Optimist class this set up a “winner takes all” scenario for Easterbrook and Newman-Holt.
Easterbrook won the start, taking the lead to the first mark, with Newman-Holt and Carter not far behind. At the second mark Easterbrook lost control in the windy conditions and Newman-Holt
overtook him. Easterbrook scrambled to upright his capsized Bic but Newman-Holt had the lead and held on to win the final race.
