On Tuesday morning students and teachers from Niua School and Nassau School took part in the fifth and final ShuttleTime Teachers Workshop conducted by Cook Islands Badminton (CIBA).

It was great to get outside and make use of the Constitution Park grounds and beautiful weather to go through some basic badminton drills and games that the teachers can take back to the pa enua and continue to deliver to their students.

CIBA have completed workshops with students and teachers from Manihiki, Rakahanga, Penrhyn and now Pukapuka and Nassau.

As we all know, it is an expensive exercise taking any programme to the northern group, so we thank the government for bringing the teams to Rarotonga and for the Ministry of Education and the schools for allowing badminton to be brought into their school programmes.

Each school received racquets, shuttles, nets, balloons, lesson plans and videos to assist the delivery of the ShuttleTime Programme.

The next step for CIBA is to take ShuttleTime to the remaining southern group island schools. After that, who knows? Perhaps in the future you may see badminton being played at the Purapura and Manea Zone Games.

Also, for all parents and children between the ages of 8 to 15, CIBA’s popular Afterschool Badminton sponsored by the Ministry of Health and their keeping healthy and active campaign has recommenced on Tuesdays at St Joseph’s hall and on Thursdays at Papaaroa Hall from 3.30pm.

Afterschool Badminton is free to play and racquets are provided – you just need to remember to bring your own water. For further details contact Hebrew Tom on 75215.
