After receiving funds from the Indian government, Sailing Cook Islands believe they have already seen positive results.

The money provided by an Indian government grant has seen the organisation acquire three 420-class dinghies, which arrived in March and were immediately put to use, resulting in the introduction of the 420 to the Rarotonga Sailing Club schools team.

The team went on to compete in April at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Teams Racing Regatta. This was the first time the team had been able to train in the boats they would go on to use in the competition.

The team achieved 14 consecutive wins, and were well-received by all that attended the regatta.

The Cook Islands Voyaging Society will also be using the boats to help teach new voyagers the basic skills of sailing, helping to empower sailors across different age groups and genders.

Currently two dinghies are here in Rarotonga, with the other two in Aitutaki and both currently being used in the Sailing in Schools programme.

Sailing Cook Islands believe they will be key to growing the Women Learn to Sail programme which is due to start later this month.

Sailing Cook Islands is very excited about the effect that these boats are having on our sailing community, creating opportunities for our youth, women, CI Voyaging Society and other groups, not only in active sailing but also for the development of water safety skills.

The organisation is looking forward to sharing their experiences with member clubs outside Rarotonga when they arrive for the upcoming Te Maeva Nui celebrations.

Interested parties can contact Rory Quirke on 54147 or Anne Tierney on 54605 for more details of training programmes.
