Final X Country race today

The final race of this year’s Rarotonga X Country series sets off later this afternoon.

After opening the series at Takitumu School back in May, competitors will hit the ground running this time at Papaaroa School.

All runners will take part in the 1.8km course, with each age group required to complete a set number of laps.

Race organiser Thomas Henderson said the series well and truly built on last year’s small beginnings.

“We rebranded the series last year after it was apparent that the cross country series had slowly faded off the sporting landscape and this year it has just continued to show that there is still an interest for it here on the island.”

“The most important thing for me is seeing the large number of kids turn up week after week to take part, as it is them who we want to look at as future representatives for the sport.”

After having a top turnout of 45 competitors at Raemaru Park in June, Henderson hopes that today they can “crack the 50 mark” for the final race.

Spot prizes will again be up for grabs, and the series winners for each age group will also be announced as well.

Race registration begins at 4.30pm, with a briefing to follow at 4.50pm and race start at 5pm.
