Top local amateur golfer William Howard rewrote the Rarotonga Golf Club’s course record in the Computer Man-sponsored tournament over the weekend.

On Saturday, the youngster not only broke his own record of eight under par, but smashed the old record to set up a new record of an unbelievable 12 under par.

Rarotonga Golf Club president George George hailed Howard for achieving this historic feat, saying that the record the golfer had achieved would be “near impossible” for anyone to break.

“Like his dad, Ned Howard, a club champion for years, and someone who has won just about every trophy there is in the club’s trophy cabinet, William has followed in his dad’s footsteps, also winning every trophy at the Rarotonga Golf Club,” George said.

“Along the way, he seems to have lifted his game to another level and therefore is reaping all the rewards of those years playing as a young junior golfer here in Rarotonga and Aitutaki, plus spending time studying and playing golf in New Zealand, which has certainly turned him into a matured, wiser and much better golfer.”

William is eyeing a chance to turn professional and therefore winning and especially breaking course records are great ingredients to achieving his childhood dream, George said.

“And all of us executives and all our members of the Rarotonga Golf Club wish ‘King William’ the ‘record smasher’ all the best in his journey to becoming a professional golfer one day.”

Meanwhile, the club hosted the 24th Michigan Motors Pro Am Shoot-Out, which was well attended by the local golfers on June 30.

Patsy Hockin won the tournament, followed by Royale Brogan who finished first runner-up and Cedric Toru finishing as the second runner-up.
