Nathan Armstrong claimed the prized Steinlager Open tournament at the Rarotonga Golf Club in Nikao last Saturday.

The newcomer with a handicap of 30 managed a gross of 94 and a 42 winning stableford to win the top prize.

He walked away with a return trip to New Zealand with all expenses paid. The trip includes three nights’ stay at the Sky City Casino Hotel for the All Blacks versus France match in June.

However, Armstrong generously handed his prize to his brother-in-law Tearoa Tini at the prizegiving ceremony later in the evening.

“Congratulations to young Nathan Armstrong, who only picked up the golf club last year and is already showing that he has got a bright future ahead of him,” club president George George said.

“And that’s what we want, the executives of the club to encourage new members to join us at the RGC to give this wonderful game of golf a go!”

Teinaki Howard, with a gross of 71 and a 40 winning stableford, finished first runner up, while Enoka Bishop with a 73 gross and 40 stableford scored second runner up. The tournament had 110 members registered to compete but only 106 were entitled to the prizes.

Twenty-four players played in the morning and had to finish before noon, while the remaining withstood the scorching sun in a five-and-a-half-hour battle for the top finish.

“I want to thank our sponsors Bond Store and Steinlager for their continuous support for the RGC for 21 years. Twenty-one years is a long time and that is certainly amazing,” George said.

“This year’s prizes were unbelievably awesome and we just can’t find the words to thank Trish (Barton) of the Bond Store, and Simon Wright from Lion Nathan New Zealand.”

The sponsors gave away some fantastic prizes worth around $20,000 to put a real edge on the battle for the top finish in the day-long event.
