An 18-member Team Cook Islands will represent the country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15.

The team, which was finalised and approved by the CISNOC board, will be comprised of members from athletics, aquatics (swimming), lawn bowls and weightlifting.

Lawn bowls makes up most of the team, with 10 representing the sport, followed by three each from athletics and aquatics and two from weightlifting.

Team chef de mission John Paul Wilson also announced who would be flagbearer for the Games – sprinter Patricia Taea.

“It was a tough decision to select from our athletes, given that all athletes performed well over the benchmark,” Wilson said.

“Patty – as we all know her by – was selected on her achievement in 2017 after she attended the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, where she made history for the Cook Islands by winning the first-ever gold medal in the women’s 200m.

“She also went on to win a silver medal in the women’s 100m and she also broke the Cook Islands national record in November 2017 before the Mini Games, with a time of 11.97 seconds – first female to break the 12-second barrier.

“We congratulate all our athletes in being selected to represent the Cook Islands and we wish them the very best at these Games.”

More than 6500 athletes and team officials from 72 nations and territories will take part in this year’s Commonwealth Games.
