Young upcoming golfer Kris “Gunz” Williamson added another major title to his burgeoning collection after claiming the season finale Rarotonga Golf Club Championship on Saturday at the Nikao golf course.

The championship brought the best out of some of the finalists in various divisions.

However, the battle between Williamson and Tom Marsters Jr in the senior men’s showdown proved the best. Despite the close win, Williamson was given a few golfing lessons and tips from Marsters Jr who is perhaps one of the club’s finest players.

In his victory speech, Williamson said he was humbled and proud to have played against Marsters Jr, who has been his idol from his junior golfing days.

He said he knew it was going to be pretty tough to beat his much-experienced opponent.

At the prize giving ceremony, proud father George “General” George, president of the Rarotonga Golf Club, said Williamson told him that he was lucky to win, as he felt that Tom was the better player between the two.

“But he thanks Tom for taking the ‘little-boy’ out of him and making him a ‘tougher and better man’ in golf,” George said.

“I was glad they finally met in the finals. Kris will definitely take what Tom showed him on the course to better himself in his future games.”

George said the club had experienced a successful 2017 golfing season with exciting competitions throughout the year.

He said the club executives would like to thank all their generous sponsors for supporting the events this year, adding they look forward to their continuous support next year.

“We also thank all our financial, and social members for this year’s success and would like to acknowledge the good work that our green keepers do in keeping our course in an immaculate state.

“We encourage everyone to continue helping out with the club’s major extension and renovation project which is happening as a work in progress right now. It can only mean that we will have an awesome clubhouse next year.”

The Rarotonga Golf Club executives and all the members also wish William “Willie” Howard and Williamson all the best as they head off to New Zealand this Sunday to play in the New Zealand Men’s Amateur Tournament in Christchurch and the Asia Pacific Tournament in Wellington, starting next week.
