Cook Islands Squash Association is all set for an exciting Club Raro Squash Open which begins this Friday at the Bluesky Sports Arena in Nikao.

The weeklong event will have players from New Zealand and Rarotonga competing.

The competition which will run from midday to 7pm daily will be play-off draws with consolation rounds to ensure everyone gets several games throughout the week.

Association president Brett Baudinet said they have over 60 players registered from New Zealand participating in the 2017 Club Raro Squash Open.

He said this was a fantastic number, bringing over a range of competitive players to participate in the local event.

“This year, we have several top A grade players which are towards the best in the world, and the first time we will have so many,” Baudinet said.

“This brings great competition for our local players and it will be an exciting week of competition to watch.

“It is free to visit the courts so we encourage anyone interested to come and see some fantastic squash.”

Baudinet said they were starting to see a consistent number of entries each year, the highest reaching more than 100 about two years ago.

He said they also have many repeat players who have participated in the past.

“This shows they love visiting our beautiful island, and enjoy the squash and daily events we put on for them.

“We seem to have a winning formula with how we have schedule the week of squash and activities for our visitors and local players, so we don’t plan to change much.

“The Club Raro Squash Open is held every year and is an exciting event for our squash club.”

Meanwhile Baudinet is also hoping for a good turnout of local participants and supporters at the event.

“We welcome anyone to come and watch as it is definitely a hopping week at the courts,” he said.

“We also encourage our local players from beginners to experience to register. This is a once a year experience you don’t want to miss.

“A special thanks to our major sponsor Club Raro, as well as our other sponsors Island Hopper Vacations, Island Car & Bike Hire, BSP, CITC, and Tower Insurance.”
