Dominant teams emerge in badminton competition

It may only be early days for the fourth Annual Business House Badminton Competition, but the teams to watch for are becoming obvious.

After two rounds PHAB Beauties and PHAB Shuttlers share the lead following some intense matches against team Edgewater and Vaiakura Holiday Homes last Tuesday at the Bluesky Sports Arena.

Dazzling Cubs also had a tough go of it in their match up against Landcourt Services, led by men’s national champ Eric Gamez.

Gamez led from the front as they just pipped their rivals 31-26.

But it was the women’s young sibling pairing of Nicolea and Amber Mateariki who really brought it to Landcourt Services in the doubles. However, they were unable to seal the win, losing 31-30. Landcourt Services eventually won 5-2.

Team Stormers may have been missing U15 Cook Island Rep Kariana Hagai, but they still managed to come away with a convincing win against Team Tapatapa 6–1, in one of the most entertaining match ups of the night.

It was great to see the family Team Tapatapa on court and enjoying the games.

The game of the evening though, was the men’s doubles matchup - or the uncle and nephew matchup, between Joseph and Deon Marsters of PHAB Beauties versus Tiki and Danniel Daniel of Edgewater Resort & Spa.

Fresh off the plane from competing at the NZ U15 Nationals Danniel was unable to hold off the attack from the very vocal PHAB pairing who took out the exhilarating match 31 – 28.

On court four, the young Team Manea took on the experienced players of Mama T’s takeaway. Despite being outplayed, Team Manea managed a win in the women’s doubles denying Mama T’s a clean sweep six matches to one.

Young Kaiyan Mataio was a standout for Team Manea and is a player to watch out for.

Anyone interested in taking part or watching some great games should be at Bluesky Sports Arena on Tuesday evenings at 5:30pm. Entry is $2 and $1 for students.

Kids’ badminton is at 4:30pm on Tuesday at the TSA and Fridays at St Joseph’s Hall at 4pm.
