Ten teams took to the courts at the Bluesky Sports Arena on Tuesday night for the first round of the 4th Annual Business House competition.

Cook Islands Badminton Association president Thomas Ngauru said teams were out to impress with not only their badminton skills, but also with their impressive team uniforms.

PHAB Beauties took on Mama T’s Takeaway in the opening clash which proved a cracker of match between Ahkim Tikaroa of PHAB Beauties and John Taulu who eventually sealed Mama T’s first win 31-30 in the men’s singles.

The nail-biting match between the two teams saw PHAB Beauties eventually win 4 matches to 3.

The Stormers led by Tinomana Naea had their work cut out for them as they took on the young PHAB Shuttlers team which included Cook Island U15 representatives Vaitoti Tupa and Teatuanui George.

It was a one-on-one tussle throughout the evening, with Vaitoti and Te Pa Tupa left to secure the team’s first win, which they did in a thriller of a match 31-29.

In the other matches, Manea and the Dazzling Cubs got off to a rocky start with the latter just managing to win 4-3 despite being one player short.

Landcourt Services and Vaiakura Holiday Homes managed clean sweep wins against Edgewater Resort and Spa and team Tapatapa 7-0, respectively.

Standout performances came from the mother and daughter pairing of Mereana and Kariana Hagai who won their women’s doubles for the Stormers.

Ngauru said it was a great effort, especially as it was Mereana’s first competitive match.

Young Mary Mare of Vaiakura Holiday Homes had an impressive night winning all three of her matches, which was great to see especially after her recent return from competing in the AIMS Games in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Social night badminton continues at St Joseph’s Hall on Friday evening at 6pm with afterschool badminton for children starting at 3.30pm

The round two competition will be held on Tuesday next week at the BSA courts.
