“It was just one of those days when everything went well,” according to Richard Powell, winner of the 2017 Manuia Beach Resort sponsored golf tournament at the Rarotonga Golf Club.

As most golfers know, those days can be infrequent especially when you have to get all aspects of the game to come together at once.

Just when your drives hit the middle of the fairway, you will find that you’re chipping and putting will desert you. Add in a howling easterly wind as was experienced by the 93 players that competed on Saturday plus the usual mental torment that most players put themselves through, then, Powell’s seven under his handicap of 19 for +7 on par was indeed an outstanding performance, a personal best for the season and a clear cut winner by two shots from runner-up, Tearoa Tini.

In third and fourth place respectively were Ned Howard and Irving Hosking on +4.

Howard like his son Willie both found some timely form approaching the Constitution Cup, with Howard senior shooting a one under par 69 and son Willie taking out the best round of the day with a four under par 66.  A couple of pleasing results for team ‘Rakahanga’!

Team ‘Takitumu’ will be smiling as well with the return of Murray McDonald who shot an even par round of 70 to take out the best of the veterans. The ladies best round went to Tania Karati with an 83 off the stick.

Nearest the pins were won by Sebon Will, Lincoln Drent, Simona Aumetua and Irving Hosking. The long drives played on handicap were won by Ali Webb and Kura Tetauru.

Ned Howard capped off a good day by taking out the birdie twos, with best dressed prizes going to ‘Captain Moko’ and Bernie Raffe. Club Manager, Leanne Kiria won the lucky draw.

This coming weekend is the Prime Foods sponsored tournament and last chance for players competing in the Constitution Cup to hone their skills.
