Handball Cook Islands has been handed the hosting rights of another regional event after successfully holding an Under-17 Oceania meet last month.

The federation will be hosting the IHF Trophy Tournament from July 31 to August 4 at the Bluesky Sports Arena.

In May, the Cook Islands played host to the IHF Oceania U17 Beach Handball Qualifiers tournament at the National Beach Courts in Nikao.

Handball Cook Islands president Makiroa Mitchell-John said the IHF Trophy Tournament was part of the International Handball Federations’ Indoor handball development programme.

“It (the tournament) gives the opportunity for all those member countries to develop in playing handball, coaching, refereeing and also officiating,” she said.

“During the tournament, IHF will have experts here with all Oceania member countries who will be in attendance for the coaching and referees courses which will be held parallel to the tournament.”

The courses will also host coaches and referees from New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti and New Caledonia.

There will be participants from a couple of outer islands and Rarotonga.

Handball Cook Islands is calling on interested local players and coaches who are willing to participate in the upcoming event.

“So if you are interested in attending (the courses), we would be happy to have you on board. For more information, contact us on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or ring 77210 so we can secure a place for you.”
