Apii Rutaki celebrated the presentation of their new netball and rugby uniforms yesterday morning.

The uniforms were blessed with a prayer from Papa Tauturu Orometua John Andrew, who encouraged the young netballers and rugby players to work hard and have pride in representing their school in the Bluesky Rising Stars’ Championship.

The uniforms were in theme with the school colour purple and had the seven petal tiare Maori school logo on it which is very significant to them.

The students selected to play were eager to try on their uniforms and prepare for the challenge.

Principal Poti Maeva said the school is very excited to be a part of the sporting event and the students competing are looking forward to doing their best.

Jackie Rongo, tournament director for the Bluesky Rising Stars’ Championship, said this is the first time they have managed to get almost every primary and secondary school to compete, whereas before they focused on the village clubs.

Rongo said there are over 750 athletes and some schools have multiple teams competing.  She said the school will need to get a team chant ready.

She added retired silver ferns player, Jodi Brown, will attend the opening ceremony to share her knowledge and experience with the future athletes of the Cook Islands.

The uniforms and the event are sponsored by Bluesky Cook Islands and the Bank of the Cook Islands (BCI) in association with Netball Cook Islands and Cook Islands Rugby Union.

Age categories include an under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 for netball and rugby.

The school’s competing this year include Apii Arorangi, Apii Avarua, Apii Nikao, St Joseph’s school, Takitumu, Te Uki Ou, Nukutere College, Tereora College and Titikaveka College.

The Bluesky Rising Stars’ Championship will be held at Raemaru park in Arorangi this Friday at 12pm.
