The Rarotonga-based players in the national netball squad to the Nations Cup in Singapore in December is holding a fundraiser this Saturday.

The fundraiser is to assist the five locally-based players attend the team camp in Auckland later next month.

These players include veteran Luciana Nicholas, Alanna Smith, Elena Mataora, Daimzel Rongokea and Phillipa Smith.

Netball Cook Islands board member Andrea Rongokea said this Saturday’s fundraiser will also kick off their drive to help raise funds for this trip.

She said they were pleased with the support from Cook Islanders especially the local based ones.

“The U21 fundraising campaign that we held was amazing. The whole campaign cost us about $100,000 and 80 per cent of it was raised from the fundraising,” Rongokea said.

“So it was a huge effort especially from our local Cook Islanders who supported the U21 campaign.”

The trip to Singapore is expected to cost the team about $50,000 and Netball Cook Islands is hopeful of a good support from Cook Islanders here and abroad in their fundraising drives.

Rongokea said they were also hoping for some financial support from Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee and other stakeholders, including sponsors.

“The local players have started training and staying together in preparation for the upcoming training camp. We are hoping they will do well.”

Netball Cook Islands earlier named an 18-member squad for the Nations Cup after a series of trials in Rarotonga, New Zealand and Australia.

The squad has six Rarotonga (one pulled out), Australia and New Zealand-based players each.

The team also has five players who were part of the Cook Islands U21 team to the Netball World Youth Championship in Botswana in July.

The national senior team will be coached by Dale Atkinson and managed Mandy Souchon.

The Nations Cup is an annual netball competition organised by Netball Singapore.

The cup was first held in 2006 and featured Papua New Guinea, Scotland and Canada.

Cook Islands is set to make its debut in this annual event.

Meanwhile the fundraiser this Saturday will see the local players selling BBQ plates on the main road in Arorangi, outside the Aro’a Nui, from 7am.
