The second edition of the Rising Stars Netball Championship kicks off this afternoon with the opening ceremony at the Punanga Nui Market.

The championship, aimed at developing netball from the grassroots level, was launched last year by tournament directors Jackie and Teina Rongo.

The tournament featured Rising Stars 17 and under, and 21-and-under grades, but this year the weekly competition will have Future Stars 12U, Shooting Stars 20+, Rising Stars 15U and Rising Stars 19U grades.

Jackie said today’s opening ceremony will be a family orientated event.

She said they would have food stalls, allowing people to bring their families along for dinner as well.

The sponsors will be introduced followed by speeches from Dr Teina Rongo, Netball Cook Islands president Patsy Hockin and representatives from platinum sponsors Bank of Cook Islands and Bluesky.

The night will end with the netball carnival activities.

The opening round of the championship will be held tomorrow.       -
