Defending champions Whangaruru took on Ruapehu in the 2016 Netball in Paradise open ladies showdown last night at the Bluesky Sports Arena in Nikao.

The Auckland-based side maintained their unbeaten run in the competition, overcoming the three teams in the grade in the two preliminary rounds of competition last week.

After a winning run in the opening round, the team overcame Ruapehu 27-16, Rising Stars 29-24 and Anguna 18-17 in close tussles in the second round on Saturday.

In the final against Ruapehu which the side defeated twice, Whangaruru headed as the hot favourites to retain their title.

The semifinals in the other grades were still underway yesterday to determine today’s Under-15, U17, social ladies and mixed grade finalists.

Netball Cook Islands president PJ Hockin was pleased with the level of commitment and enthusiasm from the participating teams.

“We saw some intense competition in the past couple of days and some close matches especially in the open grade,” she said.

“The overseas teams are providing a good challenge to the local sides who are stepping up to match the level of competition that they have brought into this tournament.”

The annual Netball in Paradise will end later tonight.
