DEFENDING champions Whangaruru made a solid start to their title defence campaign in the 2016 Netball in Paradise tournament being played at the Bluesky Sports Arena in Nikao.

The side defeated Rising Stars 21-15 in their opening ladies open match on Thursday before overcoming Ruapehu 20-15 yesterday. Whangaruru was scheduled to play local side Anguna in their third match last night.

Team manager Teresa Hita said they were hoping to maintain their winning run in a bid to retain their title. She said competition was tough with other teams in the grade trying their best to overcome them.

“Both matches were close. We just managed to pull away with the win in the final quarter of the match. It’s very competitive this year,” Hita said.

“Overall we’re enjoying the experience in Rarotonga. The players have come together for this tournament and we are hoping to put on a good show in our remaining matches.”

In the mixed-grade competition, local side Anguna looks a team to reckon with while Westiez Star have emerged favourites after early wins in the social grade. Competitions in the Under-17 and U15 grades are also being held in the Netball in Paradise which will end with the finals on Tuesday next week.         - Rashneel Kumar
