THE 2016 Netball in Paradise got off to a rousing start yesterday with the traditional turou welcoming the teams participating in this year’s tournament at Bluesky Sports Arena in Nikao.

Twenty teams, which include nine from overseas, will be competing in the five-day tournament played in five grades.

The tournament started with the opening round of round-robin games, which will be followed by the semifinals and finals playoffs, culminating on Tuesday next week.

During the opening ceremony, Netball Cook Islands president PJ Hockin thanked the sponsors and the teams for participating in this year’s Netball in Paradise.

The sponsors include Cook Island Tourism and Bluesky as silver partners, Island Car and Bike Hire as bronze sponsor and Vonnias, Air Rarotonga, Destination Management Cook Islands and Edgewater Resort and Spa as in-kind supporters.

Hockin said the annual tournament was being eyed as a development ground for netball in the Cook Islands.

The divisions in which the competitions will be held this year include Under-15 girls, U17 girls, social ladies, open ladies and mixed teams.
