Black Pearls shine in first games event

A first-up 70-38 win for the Cook Islands Black Pearls national netball team has given the side a good indication of how they will go at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.

The fresh and young side captained by Luciana Matenga dominated Tonga in what amounted to a games warm-up match for the local side.

Coach Dale Aitken says the warm-up match presented a great opportunity to give her full squad of 12 a run on court before the Pacific Games competition proper started on Tuesday (Monday CI time).

The squad had two camps in Auckland leading up to the games in Papua New Guinea with the aim of restoring mana to national netball.

The Cook Islands are rankedfourth in the current Pacific Games competition.

The Black Pearls were scheduled to play Vanuatu before facing the powerhouse of Pacific netball, the Fiji Pearls.
