Avatiu Eels’ unbeaten run is at stake in the weekly rugby league competition.

Arorangi Bears will be hoping to turn the tables on Avatiu Eels in round two of the Raro Cars Rugby League competition.

The feature match of the week to be played at The Swamp today will kick off at 4.30pm.

The Bears suffered a narrow 23-26 loss to the Eels in the opening round of the domestic competition at Raemaru Park.

The side comprising young and experienced players put on a superb performance but lacked the finishing touch to get the points. The Eels, who overcame a jittery start, managed to steal the win in the final quarter of the highly intense match.

The Bears haven’t had much luck after their first loss. The side went down to Tupapa Panthers 18-44 and defending champions Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles 20-28. They only managed one win against a struggling Titikaveka Bulldogs 48-16.

The Eels, however, maintained their perfect start by winning all of their matches in the competition so far.

The Walter Tangata-coached side handed the Sea Eagles their first loss since the start of the 2019 season after their 22-16 win at Nukupure Park.

They then went on to beat former champions Tupapa Panthers 28-20 at Victoria Park.

Last week, the Eels were handed the match points without breaking any sweat after the Bulldogs forfeited the match.

Maintaining their unbeaten run and the top spot in the competition will be Eels’ main focus. The Bears will be all out to avenge their earlier loss.

In the other premier match, Titikaveka Bulldogs will host Tupapa Panthers at Nukupure Park.

After two successive losses, the Panthers will be going all out for win against the winless Bulldogs.

In the women’s match, Town will be eyeing their third straight win against Country at Teimurimotia Park.

Town’s Moari Allsworth said: “It will be bit of a struggle with numbers because some of the players are tied with netball commitment but we’ll see how things turnout on the day.”
