Let there be no doubt that Cook Islands’ young tennis players have hit the big time: they have been practising in Auckland this week on the court next to World No 1 Serena Williams.

It’s be a highlight for the youngsters, who have been proving themselves at the Tennis Auckland Championships 2020, despite cold and windy weather.

Coach Malcolm Kajer said, the team was doing really well, and had some excellent results on the first two days. “Arikitoa Allsworth beat the number 1 seeded player in his grade and on day 2 beat the number 4 seed;  the chances of him winning his grade are high.”

Raetea Rongo also beat the number 1 seeded player in her division after winning her first round match.

Maiata Forsyth is playing well and has won her 2 rounds.

“It has been cold and windy for our junior players, but they have learnt to adjust.” Kajer said.

The team have held morning practice session with Kajer at the Scarbro Tennis Centre.

They were delighted to see United States World class tennis champion Serena Williams and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou having practice sessions at the adjacent court, along with upcoming New Zealand talent Sasha Situe, coached by Sebastian Lavie of the Lavie Tennis Academy.

The team is in good spirits and enjoying the tournament and are proud to be representing the Cook Islands, Kajer said.

The team players are: Kayla Marama Fraser, Maiata Forsyth, Raetea Rongo, Arikitoa Allsworth, Luke Pierre, Frederick Estall, Daniel Forsyth. – Melina Etches
