Senior sailing takes place at Muri Lagoon in outrigger canoes (6m Tangaroa Class) and 4m sunbursts from early May to late November, every Saturday afternoon.

Saturday last week saw the annual opening day for seniors at the Rarotonga Sailing Club.

Supported by a host of junior sailors in smaller sailboats and many onlookers, it was a sight to behold.

This was a rare (this summer) bright sunshine day with light and tricky wind conditions ensuring the winners were not obvious until each of the 3 races was finished.

The opening race of the season was for the historic Pags Trophy which was originally donated by “Pag” (a popular tea maker for the club 40 or so years past).

The 1999 clubhouse fire destroyed the trophy and another was donated by Craig and Louise Robertson. Craig was a club captain at the time.

The Pags Trophy 2019 was won by Jolene Bosanquet and Grace Newman-Holt (sunburst class) and Francis Kirkham and Barbara Mclellan (vaka class).

It was great to see on the water as skippers, 13-year-old George Newman-Holt and returning RSC racing helm Andre Bennett who sails regularly in Auckland while attending school there.
