Cricketers hope for good weather

The Varo Media Country and Sky Pacific Town women’s teams have used the extra week gifted to them after last weekend’s washout to sharpen their skills before their clash in the 21 South Group Vaka of Origin III cricket competition today.

The two teams were supposed to do battle on Saturday last week at the Turangi Oval but rain forced the one-off match to be postponed to this weekend.

And weather permitting, Country and Town players will put their bodies on the line today to win the prestigious title in the 50 over clash.

Cook Islands Cricket Association chief executive officer Davis Teinaki said they are hoping for a fine weather to finally get the Vaka of Origin series underway.

He said both teams looked well prepared and were eager to show off their skills at the Turangi Oval.

“The postponement was surely a blessing in disguise for both teams. Although they were preparing well for this match, they probably needed the extra week to do the final touch up,” Teinaki said.

“We are expecting an exciting and tough competition after the postponement.

“I’m requesting people to come out in numbers and enjoy some quality cricket from the Country and Town teams.”

Country holds the Vaka of Origin title after winning all three legs in last year’s series.

The onus is on Town to upset their opponents but the Country side are confident of a successful defence.

In the inaugural year of the Vaka of Origin series in 2016, three men’s games in the 50 over format were held.

The following year (last year), the women’s competition was introduced which meant changing to a 20/20 format to successfully hold two matches per each Saturday.

This year the organisers decided to play only a one-off women’s and men’s match to ensure better performance.

The Vaka of Origin features the top players from Rarotonga’s club competition.
