It wasn’t the perfect start, but the Cook Islands Cricket under-19 team won the hearts of the officials and supporters in the opening match of the New Zealand tour on Sunday.

The team landed in New Zealand over the weekend and headed straight to Kaipaki in Hamilton to play the host side.

Batting first, the hosts were dismissed for 215 runs in a 40 over innings, a format the local boys have never played before.

Billy William impressed with the ball taking three wickets and was well supported by his team.

When batting the Kaipaki bowlers, fatigue had the boys struggling in the 31 degree heat.

The national side was eventually dismissed for 160 runs with captain Tomo Pana top-scoring.

Cook Islands U19 coach Shane Phillips said lack of rest contributed to the loss.

However, he was pleased with the effort.

“Having had only a couple of hours sleep from the early flight over, the Cook Islands boys showed how much their training has made a difference to their game,” Phillips said.

“The coaches were stunned at the high level of fielding and not a single catch was missed. Coaching staff were well pleased with effort against a much older established side.”

Despite the loss, Phillips said players had set the standard for the rest of the tour.

The side had a rest day on Monday visiting Rotorua before taking on Auckland’s Rangitoto College yesterday.

The 11-day tour will see the national side competing against teams from Auckland and Hamilton.

Earlier, Phillips said the Cook Islands Cricket Association had been working hard this year developing clearer pathways and opportunities for teenage players.

“This tour is just the next step in their development.”           - RK
