The Varo Media Country side is confident of retaining the women’s title in the 21 South Group Vaka of Origin III cricket match tomorrow.

After last year’s whitewash over the Sky Pacific Town team, the Country side is looking forward to another dazzling win in their one-off, 50-over battle at the Turangi Oval.

The side, coached by Amoa More, who is also the mentor of the champion Turangi women’s team, has been in training during the festive season to ensure they remain on top of their game on Saturday.

More said they were wary of the Town team, but confident of overcoming them in the do-or-die clash.

Most of the players in the Country team are from the champion Turangi and Avana team which made it through to the knockout stages of the weekly Rarotonga cricket season last month.

“The cricket season finished last month and most of our players were involved heavily in the final rounds of the game.

“They trained hard during that period and maintained their form to ensure they are fully prepared for this Vaka of Origin match,” More said.

“According to the Town coach, they have a good side this year, but I’m pretty confident we will win again.

“It’s a 50-over match and we have set a target to get their players out by 25 overs and score at least 300 runs if we bat first.”

More said the Vaka of Origin match between the two teams tomorrow would be a thriller, advising fans not to miss the opportunity to see “the best of the best” from the domestic cricket competition competing against each other.

“The players selected for these two teams are the best players from the Cook Islands, so fans should expect some top action from both teams this Saturday.”

Entry to the game, scheduled to start off at 10am, is free.

Meanwhile More, on behalf of the Turangi club, thanked Charlies, Super Brown, Dive Shop, Rarotonga Plumbing, Kainuku Ariki, Louisa and Kainana for their support last year.

“We thank them and the people of Turangi,” he added.
