The Cook Islands under 19 boys are off to New Zealand on January 20 for a 11-day tour which will see them play against teams from Auckland and Hamilton.

Cook Islands Cricket Association have been working hard this year to develop clearer pathways and opportunities for teenage players and this tour is just the next step in their development.

Shane Phillips and Shane Munokoa will coach and manage the team.

Phillips has been working with the Rarotonga-based players while Munokoa has been training the Aitutaki boys.

The squad is a selection of the most promising and dedicated boys from both islands.

“We were not only looking for natural talent but more importantly those who love playing the game, and are dedicated to taking their game to a new level,” Phillips said.

The team will play 12 Twenty20 games over six playing days.

Two games a day is the requirement under the International Cricket Council qualifying games and Phillips said it was a great opportunity for the boys to test their physical and mental strength under similar format in this tour.

The team will be fundraising over the next few weeks and look forward to receiving plenty of support on and off the pitch.
