If Avana’s stunning win over defending men’s champions Tupapa was just the start of the top order collapse, Nikao completed the rout, ousting top guns Takuvaine in another exciting battle.
But it was the tussle between rivals Arorangi Red Backs and Muri Creeps at Nukupure Park that garnered the biggest attention over the weekend.
Batting first, the Red Backs needed just four hitters to amass a total of 175 runs, thanks to a quality knock by Jeff Vinicombe, who scored 106 not out.
In reply, Muri batters faced a mammoth task from Red Backs skipper Denne Bourke, who made it difficult for them with his damaging left arm swings. Bourke collected two key wickets for just 12 runs from his four overs.
But the Creeps gained momentum with Mike Hoff managing 62 runs and Sonny Shepherd 58 runs to stabilise their chase.
Muri needed just 14 runs in the final over to win, but some tight bowling from Arorangi saw them claim a six run win and collect their first points in the opening game of the season.
In the other exciting match, three-time runners-up Titikaveka Titans overcame a jittery start to beat Matavera by 51 runs.
Batting first, the Titans struggled against Matavera bowlers George Williams and Moni Uini, who collected two wickets each, to collect 129 runs.
Parutu Zekaria was the star batsman for Titans after scoring a match winning runs of 37.
The Matavera batters couldn’t get the momentum going in their run chase, with George Williams (18) and Moni Uini (34), the only two batters to register double figures.
Nick Rous, the pick of the Titans bowlers, collected four wickets as the Titans marched on to a 51-run victory.
In the other men’s match, the Vane Tangimetua’s Turangi boys made a solid start to the season against the young Tupapa II side.
Turangi’s Tereinga Moaote enjoyed the home field advantage racking up a century to lead the side to victory.
The women’s matches were equally impressive as last season’s runner ups Turangi/Avana started off well with a resounding victory over Tupapa.
Batting first, Turangi/Avana scored 217 runs, thanks to the efforts of Mona Amoa (72 runs) and Margaret Simiona (42 runs).
The Tupapa side gave the run chase a great nudge, with Tokoono leading the charge with 33 runs supported by Tia with 31 but the side managed only 131 runs.
In the other match, the Muri women’s team were a notch up from their male counterparts after beating Arorangi Red Hot Chicks.
Muri batted first and after losing eight wickets, managed to pile on 189 runs from their 20 overs.
Arorangi started off well with opener Diani Tamaiva putting the side a good position early in their innings with 19 runs before retiring due to injury.
Phillipa Arona was equally impressive with 24 runs, but not good enough for the side as they went down to Muri who extended their unbeaten run to 12 matches.
The Computer Man women’s points: Turangi/Avana (4 points), Muri (4), Takuvaine (4), Tupapa (0), Nikao (0) and Matavera (0/Bye).
