Manihiki won the inaugural Pa Enua Tokerau cricket competition which ended yesterday at Nikao Field.

The competition was part of the level one coaching and umpiring workshop Cook Islands Cricket Association held for Te Kura Uira students from Manihiki, Penrhyn, Mitiaro and Rakahanga.

After round robin matches on Thursday, Manihiki and Rakahanga finished on top, setting up an exciting final.

Manihiki skipper Apolo Johnson won the toss and decided to bowl. Rakahanga batters Tea Toka and Vakaoho Takai got the side off to a great start with Napa Banapa, Marie Repaio, Purotu Vakatini all chipping in with runs.

Teokotai John, Rimaati Tuakana and Trina Karaponga bowled well to restrict Rakahanga to just 34 runs.

Manihiki batters went ‘boom’ with the bat with Luka Kaitara, Tarau Tarau and Pokoina Tairea scoring quick runs to accumulate 73 and win the competition.

The players were awarded with their certificates and free bats courtesy of sponsors The Computer Man and Hori Signs.

Cook Islands Cricket chief executive officer Alister Stevic said the week would not have been possible without the passion and hard work of Louisa Tongatama and thanked her and the sponsors for putting on a ‘fantastic’ week.
