The brothers have been selected for the forthcoming international cricket tournament to be staged in Lismore, Australia starting on November 18.
The Zekaria brothers play their cricket out of the Titikaveka Titans cricket club and are excited to be representing the country.
Older brother Pastor has been in the national training squad for six months while Tuaine’s call up comes off the back of a withdrawal.
On his selection Tuaine said he was surprised to get the call up but is looking forward to the challenge.
“I was really stoked to get the call up. The coach has explained to me that I will need to work hard to get game time. If I do get the opportunity to play then I am going to make the most of it”.
Coach Nga Emile said that Tuaine’s selection was made with an eye to the future.
“When considering a replacement player we looked to the future. Tuaine is full of enthusiasm and will gain a lot of experience from being exposed to an international tournament. At just 17 Tuaine has many years of cricket to offer the Cook Islands.”
Emile said that brother Pastor was a key feature in the team offering both a middle order batting and spin bowling option.
“In my mind, the greatest challenge a young player faces on debut is the intimidation of the ‘big stage’. If the player can block out the distractions and focus on every ball then they are going a long way in giving themselves every opportunity to perform.”
The Cooks side is ranked a lowly 8th place in the region and have set themselves the objective of a top five finish at tournament.
The lads depart this Thursday evening and have three games scheduled against Rotorua (NZ) before playing two T-20 matches on the opening day against the top two ranked teams PNG (1pm) and Vanuatu (5.30PM).
