The men’s national cricket team are gearing up for a two week international cricket tournament to be held in Lismore, Australia starting in a weeks’ time.

The Cook Islands will play a series of Twenty-20 matches against other teams from the East Asia-Pacific region including the Philippines, Japan, PNG, Vanuatu, Fiji, Indonesia and Samoa.
The Cook Islands men’s side is ranked a lowly 8th place in the region and have set themselves the objective of a top five finish at the tournament, with the hope of reaching 3rd place within 10 years.
According to coach Nga Emile the Cook Islands haven’t held a top five ranking for over 12-years. “That’s something we want to change. Obviously every team at the tournament wants to win and we are no different however we feel that if we can keep expectations realistic and we can focus on our key objectives then we have a chance of improving our ranking,” says Emile.
“The key will be to focus on one game at a time. The objective is to work our hearts out to reach a top 5 spot and then work toward being 3rd in the region within 10 years.”
The Cooks side have lost a couple of key players through injury or family member’s passing away however Emile believes that the team still has the talent to push hard for a top five position.
Emile will get the opportunity to try some combinations ahead of the tournament with three games scheduled against Rotorua (NZ) before touching down in Lismore on November 17.
The Cook Islands will play two T-20 matches on the opening day (November 18th Cook Islands time) against PNG and Vanuatu from 1pm and 5:30PM (local time) respectively.
Live scoring will be available at crichq.com with regular updates on Facebook and Cook Islands News. The lads depart this Thursday evening.
The team includes – Pastor Zekaria (Titikaveka Titans), Osolai Akai (Tupapa CC), Wayken Punga (Tupapa CC), Shane Munokoa (Vaipae CC), Davies Teinaki (Tupapa CC), Manu Emile (Arorangi CC), Tinolei Etita (Palmerston North CC), Mati Atiau (Tupapa CC), Chauncey Flay (Titikaveka CC), Daniel Vailoa (Tupapa CC), Ngametua Tariau (Tupapa CC), Toala Teinaki (Tupapa CC), Ray Roumanu (Matavera CC) and manager Mou Marurai.
