Smoke Signals

When is public consultation not a public consultation? When it’s held in Mitiaro and run by Cook Islands Party stalwarts in the Island Council.

What was supposed to be a public consultation on sea bed minerals and the government issuing exploratory licenses disintegrated into something resembling a CIP rally with Minister Rose Brown telling all about her daughter’s defection and the government status.

Those who wanted to ask hard questions were pretty much told to shut up by CIP supporters. Then the meeting wandered off into random subjects like national superannuation.

If this is typical of the type of “consultations” Mark Brown has been having in the outer islands, it is nothing but a farce and waste of taxpayer money paying for extra flights to the Pa Enua and excess bureaucratic bums on seats.
