Tepaki’s the man to make our future really great...

Oh my goodness! Why are we having an election for members of Parliament when there is one man, one single proud Cook Islands successful developer and genius who promises $20 per hour wages for scrubbing papa’a toilets, a billion dollar economy, $95 airfares to Aitutaki and $100 million in new taxes, and all while holding hands with China? Tim, can we all write in your name when we go to the polls in June? If a majority of all votes cast are for Tim, won’t that make Tim the only person elected as well as the prime minister? Write in Tim for Paradise Now Party.

CINews reported recently that our Police Department’s prosecution team was under pressure. If that is the case, why are smokers of weed being chased and prosecuted? An increasing number of states in the US, and countries around the world, have finally given up on the many fictions about a plant that is of immense value to humans. Do our legislators want us to be the last place on earth that thanks the God that we say we worship for this gift created by His hand?

Rumour has it that later this year Bluesky are going to cease the use of email addresses such as,,,etc., etc. If this is in fact true, what action do we have to take to continue to be able to use email?

SS: See the explanatory story in today’s issue of CINews.

An island personality is fond of the saying, “if you tell a lie often enough, it becomes the truth.” I was somewhat startled to discover that this is a modified version of a statement from the late and much unlamented Nazi monster, Josef Goebbels. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”  Given some of the bluster that has been going on in political circles over the last few days, there are some people in high places who seem to have taken Goebbels’ advice on board.

Toagate this, Toagate that, and it’s mostly coming from “Mr Departure Gate”, of all people.

I read with concern comments from finance minister Mark Brown in Monday’s CINews that Chinese would have no interest in military installation in the Cook Islands due to the relatively small debt this country owes them. China doesn’t care about a few millions. They are playing a long game, and with the aim of using economic might to control other nations. We come to Rarotonga from Melbourne each year. This is our 10th visit. We love your country and would hate to see you lose your culture, freedom of academic expression and suburban way of life to the Chinese, as we have. Don’t sell out!

So, the erstwhile Mr George, man of many successful business ventures over the years, including house builder and rental equipment operator and airline owner, is beside himself that not only a woman, but a 22-year-old woman, is running for parliament and for “his” seat. How dare she? Not only does Norman have the distinction of having run those businesses to heights of success, paying untold millions in taxes, Mr George also holds the renown of being the only solicitor in the 110-year history of the land court of being banned for life from appearing in that court. Te-Hani Brown, you must step aside. In my opinion, you need to get a few more years under the belt, run three businesses into the ground, and be disciplined for life by the Chief Justice before you pretend you are qualified for a seat in parliament.
