De-sex and care for your dogs

THE CRUELTY SHOWN to those poor dogs featured in CI News this week was appalling,” a smoke signaller says.

“But another thing that’s really cruel is the way some locals refuse to take their dogs to Esther Honey to be de-sexed. These dogs follow their natural doggie impulses and have puppies, and next thing you know, there are more even starved animals wandering around, copping abuse and ill treatment when they try to scavenge food from people’s properties. A case in point is the two gorgeous puppies now wandering around scared and hungry in Betela. If you can’t look after animals, you don’t deserve to have them. Too many people just don’t give a damn.”

MORE SHIPS THAN THE BISMARCK

IT WAS SAD to hear of the hard-working Tapi Taio’s boat going on to the reef at Nassau, a smoke signaller says. “It’s really rough luck. But it also brings back memories of the former shipping company Silk & Boyd, which local wag Jack Cooper used to say had sunk more ships than the Bismark.

RIDER IN WORLD OF THEIR OWN

“IT MUST BE difficult to drive your bike while you are texting on your phone,” a smoke signaller says. But it must be extra difficult to be aware of what’s going on around you when you’re also listening to music on headphones – and have no mirror on your bike.”

HELMETLESS WOMAN PULLED OVER

“IT WAS GOOD to see the police being as good as their word and out enforcing the helmet laws yesterday morning,” a smoke signaller says. “A cop was following me and though I wasn’t doing anything wrong, I was sure he was going to pull me over. So I took the initiative and pulled up in a space on the side of the road. But the cop just went past and instead pulled over a woman who was riding into town without a helmet.”

HOW MUCH DOWN DRAIN ON WATER?

IT WOULD BE interesting to find out how much money has been spent so far on the dreaded Te Mato Vai water project, another smoke signaller says. “With all the messing around and starts and re-starts, I reckon it is well and truly over budget. The question is, who will be made accountable?”

AITUTAKI POLICE JUST A WASTE

I JUST WANT to point out I think it is a waste of time having police in Aitutaki with the amount of underage drivers going around, a smoke signaller says. “They are making a mockery of the Cook Islands Police. They are not scared, and why should they be? The people of Aitutaki don’t respect them. Why bother having police here? Come on Aitutaki police, you need to be seen more in the community. Don’t just drive through it thinking, ‘Oh yup that village is done’. I’ve seen children aged from 10 and 11 driving. You tell them off and they look at you like, ‘If the police can’t stop me why are you telling me’. Police, please be more active.

ROCKY QUERY FOR GOVERNMENT

CI NEWS HAS talked about sand mining, but what about rock mining? Like the hole where all those big rocks come from in Arorangi. They have been used in many government and aid/donor projects. Does an EIA need to be completed?

STOP ADOPTING, START CULLING

I AM SICK of the Esther Honey Foundation and SPCA. They take sick and neglected animals and then adopt them out without even checking the people they are giving them to. The best thing EHF and SPCA could do is humanely put the animals down. Stop adopting and start culling.
