To watch Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna defend the title of MP in such an eloquent yet simplified way, it’s obvious in his address to the parliament, that the Cook Islands News article was wrong.
What I love most about my people is their ability to forgive.
In the Cook Islands, that innocent person is your brother, your uncle, your papa ... not just another MP. That accusation on that MP impacts his family, his village, his people.
You are in a position to influence the masses. With that comes a responsibility with your freedom of speech. That responsibility must include telling the truth and nothing but the truth.
May God bless the Cook Islands and keep my people safe.
Editor’s note: The Cook Islands News stands by its article on MPs’ spousal travel allowances. The article was fair and accurate. Readers are invited to listen to the original recording of Parliament’s Question Time last Thursday, to judge for themselves.
