Daphne Marsters: Journalist banned

Kia Orana and thank you Cook Islands News.

A great boss once said to me, “you may not like the person, but always respect their title whilst they are in their working position. Because they are elected to be the best person for the job at the time.”

To watch Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna defend the title of MP in such an eloquent yet simplified way, it’s obvious in his address to the parliament, that the Cook Islands News article was wrong.

What I love most about my people is their ability to forgive.

In the Cook Islands, that innocent person is your brother, your uncle, your papa ... not just another MP. That accusation on that MP impacts his family, his village, his people.

You are in a position to influence the masses. With that comes a responsibility with your freedom of speech. That responsibility must include telling the truth and nothing but the truth.

May God bless the Cook Islands and keep my people safe.

Daphne Marsters

Editor’s note: The Cook Islands News stands by its article on MPs’ spousal travel allowances. The article was fair and accurate. Readers are invited to listen to the original recording of Parliament’s Question Time last Thursday, to judge for themselves.

Editor you have hit a sore point with the politicians ... they have recently received a 50% pay increase during very difficult economic times with many people struggling, now they look around for what else they get out of the system to be paid more money. The politicians are in a very privileged position and should have shown humanity and forgone these payments while the country in crises, like the ordinary person on the street who was had their income reduced. I think it is called leadership.

The Editor's note reminds one of Donald Trump's "Read the transcript". He used this rebuttal knowing no one would read the transcript and so he would retain his followers. Editor you can do better than this?
