Letters: Exporting people

Thursday January 23, 2020 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear editor,

Thomas Tarurongo Wynne’s column (“Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”, Jan 18) was very revealing, but none more so than the information gleaned from the New Zealand Parliamentary Library revealing there were 81,000 Cook Islanders living in New Zealand in 2018.

Finally, the truth is revealed! This is our country’s biggest export ever, our huge depopulation of Cookies to Aotearoa, more so since  this government took office in 2010

Yes, like my father Solomona William did a lifetime ago, our whanau then and now left for better opportunities abroad. Employment in industries of agriculture, fishing, freezing works, factories, and better educational opportunities for their children in the land of plenty.

Our whanau left because government failed not just them, but our whole Ipukarea.

Thanks to this government, the exodus of Cookies will continue. So I say, enough is enough.

Our Cookies here and abroad must start fighting for our Ipukarea's very future and changing this incompetent government who have failed our people is the plan.

Ka kite e kia manuia,
Papa Williams
