Letters: Banking in Rarotonga

Monday November 11, 2019 Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear editor,

Fifty years ago on November 10, 1969 the National Bank of New Zealand opened for business in Avarua in premises adjacent to the Post Office.

I was the manager and my staff of four comprised Warwick Pike, his wife Jenny, John Kenning and Grant Kerr.

Accompanied by my wife Cynthia we all returned to Rarotonga for the 40th anniversary of the opening 10 years ago in 2009.  Sadly both Warwick and John died shortly after the wonderful week we all enjoyed with friends there. We were the trailblazers for the banking profession.

Everyone in Rarotonga will remember with affection “JK” as he became known after he returned to the island and married Maara.  Two of their grandchildren received their secondary schooling at the renowned Whanganui Collegiate School in Whanganui where my wife and I now live.

Jenny, Grant, and I retain fond memories of our time in Rarotonga and send our warm regards to you all.
