Dear editor

The latest $1 billion drug bust aboard a Cook Islands-flagged yacht is one of many strange stories of Cook Islands flags in the papers.

There was the crew held up in Scotland recently.

Four years ago in Italy another Cook Island flagged ship was detained full of drugs.

The same year another CI flagged ship off the coast of Turkey was bombed twice by Syrian planes.

No one has ever answered to why these boats in these far off ports are sporting a Cook Islands flag.

We have been under the microscope for money laundering and now it seems we are an easy mark for transporting drugs and possibly worse.

What is the procedure for applicants to gain the right to fly our flag and is this the way we want to make a name for ourselves around the world?
