The Queen recognises queens; can’t we?

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your thoughtful editorial on Monday the 17th regarding the Elton John movie.

It reminded me of a story run by Cook Islands News when our past Te Tiare Association president Valery Wichman received a Queen’s award to fly to London to be met by Queen Elizabeth.

This prestigious award was given to Valery in recognition of the work she had done alongside Te Tiare to improve the lives of the Cook Islands LGBTQI+ community.

Surely if the Queen recognises the importance of the work done by Elton John and Valery in improving the lives of our very own community, of which more than 10 per cent identify as LGBTQI+ (Futter-Puati, 2017), then the showing of a movie is the least we can do in celebrating the life of such a wonderful man.

Meitaki maata e kia manuia,

Dr Debi Futter-Puati

Dear Editor,

A sure way to make something more popular is to try and ban it.
