Second record surplus sounds like fake news

Dear Editor,

It’s been another magical performance by the Minister of Finance to achieve a record budget surplus for the second year in a row – or has it?

Please tell the public how much of this surplus comes from savings and extra revenue in the government’s operational budget and how much is made up of unspent capital budget.

Even if all of the $27 million-dollar surplus came from the operational budget, one has to question the minister and government’s ability to make such a huge mistake in its estimates, which has resulted in government siphoning millions from the private sector and the community into its kitty, the worst and most wasteful place to park surplus money for the country.

However, this $27 million surplus is mostly likely to be a ‘fake surplus’, dreamt up by Minister Brown and the government.

Already government is warning ministries of budget cutbacks this year, including a cutback to the budget of ‘the goose that has been laying the golden egg’ for this country – the Cook Islands Tourism Office.

A $27 million-dollar surplus? Tell us another one!

Yours,

            The Accountant
