Don’t ask for a free ride

Dear Editor,

Recently the Grey Power has had ads playing on TV asking that they don’t get taxed.

I have to ask myself why should you not be taxed. Is there a country in this day and age that doesn’t tax super? It definitely gets taxed in New Zealand.

Is it because of your elderly status you should not be taxed? With all due respect, let me get this right: Most of the Grey Power members have spent lots of years working overseas and have now returned home, with a bigger pension package than most of our local elderly who don’t rally and whine and complain. And you say the Grey Power pensioners should be tax exempt? Really? You use the same roads I use, the same hospital I use, the same dental care I use, the same government services I use, the same water system I use etc. The list goes on and on, and you are saying I should fund this for you with my hard earned tax deductions?

The same road you rallied on once upon a time is the same road my taxes my mum and dad paid for!

Come home give back, enjoy our great country, but please don’t ask for a free ride. No-one else is.
