Parts of downtown Avarua ‘an absolute disgrace’

Your letter writer, “Welcome to toilet town” (CINews October 4), raises a very good point.

Parts of downtown Avarua are an absolute disgrace.

First prize for the biggest disgrace of all is the old AB Donald building. It is like a rotting tooth amongst buildings that are otherwise of a good standard.

Why the owner of that disgrace is allowed to leave it in such a deplorable state is beyond belief. Is the owner a person of influence? No doubt what the answer to that question would be.

Purely from a public safety point of view, the owner should be made to demolish and totally clear the site, in a cyclone the flying debris and roofing iron could cause deaths.

Similar buildings and facades are equally of poor standard. I personally shrink or cringe every time I drive by with visitors from overseas. Next first prize for allowing a dangerous disgrace to exist goes to the Cook Island government. Lift your game Mr Prime Minister. You should pass immediate legislation to give the owner of AB Donalds’ rotting eyesore 14 days to remove it and make the site safe.
