Long wait for Aitutaki flight last straw for visitors

Wednesday October 04, 2017 Published in Letters to the Editor

My wife and I have visited the Cook Islands five times in the past 10 years, three visits to Rarotonga and twice to Aitutaki.

We now only stay on Aitutaki because of the many issues with staying on Rarotonga; packs of wild dogs running amok, several restaurants have tried to overcharge us, local car rental companies renting unsafe and mechanically defective vehicles, etc.  Rarotonga has lost its idyllic charm.

Why has Air NZ ruined our holiday?  Air NZ changed their LAX/RAR flight schedule for the worst.  We used to arrive on Monday morning at 6:30 am and then take the 8:00 am flight to Aitutaki, not any more.

Since the flight now arrives on Sunday morning, the first flight to Aitutaki does not leave until 12 noon.  Since everything is closed on Sunday mornings, there is no place to go and nothing to do in between flights and that means having to sit on those hard metal benches at the airport for nearly six hours.

Ouch, what a way to start a holiday!

Not wanting to endure being confined to the airport, we have cancelled our Cook Island holiday plans and plan to visit Fiji instead.
