Fishing fine a drop in ocean

Monday September 04, 2017 Published in Letters to the Editor

We see that Vanuatu just fined a Chinese fishing vessel three million dollars for violations in Vanuatu waters. Makes the Cook Islands look pretty silly with the recent $140,000 fine approved with PM and Marine Resources minister, Henry Puna, “keeping an eye on negotiations”.

Once the Chinese have our politicians by the short and curlies, Christmas comes more than once year.

The apparently politically-motivated lawsuit to seize Teina Bishop’s boat also looks a bit silly when we could have seized the Chinese vessel that we fined $140,000 and sent on its way, with how much fish in the hold?
