It reminds me of the campaigning time before the last General Election when promises were made that pensions would be increased. This was never done until the next General Election was just about to begin.
This time round, Mark uses the expression “as soon as we can afford it” meaning never, because there will be no money around at all if they have a second chance to joyride around the world rather than run this country.
It is easy to see that Mark Brown and his highly-paid mates in Cabinet have noticed that not very many Cook Islanders are around, aged 70 and over. That is obviously the reason why they only target these elderly people for a boost in pension. There are just too many Cook Islanders with NCDs – diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cancer and alcohol-related liver complaints (see recent article on Binge drinking) around, for many of them to make it past 70.
Besides, I would like to know the Minister’s reason for excluding 65 year olds from a pension increase They probably need a pension increase to $700 just as much (if not more) than the 70+ years old.
