Editorial: Independent – of whom?

Business argues for a bigger say in who regulates a fledgling phone and internet freemarket. They demand assurance the new authority will be independent of government.

They are entitled to be concerned – after all, government owns Avaroa Cable Ltd, and owns a big chunk of Bluesky Cook Islands.

But as well as being independent of government, the public should also expect that the regulator be independent of the telcos – it is these companies, after all, that need to be regulated.

The greatest concern would be the undue influence of industry players. The poacher should not be allowed to turn gamekeeper.
