Staff from Rima’s Takeaway, the nearby beauty salon, Rongohiva, Red Stall (Chinese takeaway), CIPS, Raro Cars, Island Car and Bike Hire and Raro Safari Tours spent most of yesterday cleaning the mess left behind by the flood which hit from 9pm to 11pm.
Some of the businesses hope to resume operations today.
Rima’s Takeaway owner Rima Moeau said the water level from the nearby creek started rising after they closed the eatery at around 8.30pm.
“We left the place at around 8.30pm and by 9pm, the water level had increased and started seeping into the nearby buildings,” Moeau said.
“The floor was covered with mud from the flooding and we spent the whole morning cleaning it.
“The soft drinks which were stored on the floor have been destroyed by this flood. Luckily, the stuff for pastry was in a bucket and we managed to salvage that.”
Red Stall staff also spent most of yesterday clearing the mud from inside their premises.
The takeaway stall did not suffer major damage and hoped to resume operations from today.
Raro Safari Tours owner Sam Crocombe said they had lost everything stored on the ground.
