COOK ISLANDS Meteorological Services is urging the public to listen out for and heed any weather warnings as we move deeper into the cyclone season.

Director Arona Ngari said the outlook up until Christmas is for rain and tropical depressions that can cause floods and strong winds leading up to a tropical cyclone.

“If a tropical depression is cited, the general public should pay attention to our warnings and tune in with the media to get more information on these events,” Ngari said.

He said the weather could always develop into a more severe situation and tropical cyclones can build up over three days or more. He said CIMS also has a website (met.gov.ck) that the public can obtain information from as well as a Facebook page that always has the latest weather updates.

Moreover, Ngari said troughs of low pressure being felt in the Cook Islands for the past few days can be expected to affect the Cook Islands right through Christmas.

“As long as low pressure is felt and close to the island, there will always be high chances of rain and if the air is unstable, thunderstorms can also occur, it is the norm,” he said.

He said humidity will also be felt at this time of the year and this is related to low pressure in the sense that winds from the north will bring northerly winds that are damp and uncomfortable.

Meanwhile, this week’s weather update sees a weak trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers remaining slow moving over the southern Cooks with showers and a few thunderstorms over Aitutaki and Palmerston.

A trough of low pressure with associated cloud and showers also lies slow moving over the northern Cooks and for Rarotonga, we should expect to experience cloudy periods with brief showers this week.
