Using iPads in the classroom will be the focus of workshops by an IT expert in Rarotonga this week.

Andrew Churches, an expert in the use of technology in learning from New Zealand, is visiting Rarotonga this week to facilitate workshops in schools.

The workshops begin Tuesday at Rutaki School, and will continue at Avarua School and Avatea School today and Thursday respectively.

The aim of the workshops is to encourage teachers to use technology in a transformative way, developing learning activities that could not be achieved without the use of technology. The focus will be on using iPads to assist learning.

The workshops are aimed at teachers of year 1 to 8 students and will involve practical, hands-on activities that teachers will trial with students.

Teachers will then be able to use these activities in their own classrooms.

Churches visited the Cook Islands last year to present information on how technology can influence education.

The workshops will run from 8am to 1.30pm from Tuesday until Thursday.
