Independent candidate Robert Tapaitau, who won the Penrhyn seat in the 2018 general election, will be flown over to Rarotonga on a government-chartered flight.

The Electoral Office is seeking clarification from the Crown Law Office on the due date of petitions challenging the validity of the 2018 general election.

The six Head of Ministry (HOM) positions advertised by Office of the Public Service Commissioner this week will be finalised when a new government is confirmed.

No change to election result

The Cook Islands Party (CIP) remains confident of forming government again despite the final count earlier this week showing no change to the result announced on the night of the June 14 election.

Discussions have been held between the government and the Democratic Party on a number of actions considered necessary to proceed during the caretaker government period.

Petitions may follow final count

The leading political parties have not ruled out the possibility of filing petitions after the final count of the votes from the 2018 general elections, expected to be completed later today.

Grey Power president Dennis Tunui says he is “very happy” at the prospect of a new Democratic Party-led government, as it means he and his fellow recipients of New Zealand Superannuation in the Cook Islands will no longer be taxed on their pension.
